History

The University of Newcastle RUFC, founded in 1955, is one of the oldest University of Newcastle sporting clubs and boasts a fine history of participation in the Newcastle & Hunter Rugby Union Premier competition (P1, P2, P3 & Colts U20s). In recent years the Club has also fielded a team in the Hunter Women’s Rugby Competition.


The Club has produced numerous representative players from Newcastle Senior and Colts teams, NSW Country, NSW to Australian representatives. 

The Club’s home ground is the University No 1 ‘Bernie Curran’ Oval and is located in the heart of the University’s Callaghan Campus. The Club is affiliated with NUsport and as such has access to training fields & facilities at The Forum  that are without peer in NSW Country Rugby. 

Training during the season is held on No.1 Oval from 6pm to 8:00pm each Tuesday & Thursday evenings. Pre-season training commences in early February. 

Students, graduates, alumni of other Universities and non-students are welcome at our Club. If you would like some further information or wish to express an interest in playing please do not hesitate to contact us through this website. 

The Club is a strong supporter of the Australian Universities Rugby Union and participates annually each March in the Laffan Cup competition, the annual rugby challenge between Australian Universities. The Laffan Cup serves as the selection trial for the combined Australian Universities team. Players who are selected in the Australian Universities team are eligible for the award of a University Sporting Blue. The University of Newcastle RUFC were the victors of the inaugural Laffan Cup in 2010.
